City of VIENNA
The Austian capital city (1,7 million inhabitants) benefits from a very well developped public transport network putting all city wonders at users hand. All means of public transportation are used and combined into a very good multimodal way:
- 5 line of underground
- 30 Tram lines
- 83 bus lines from which 23 are night lines
The fleet is made of 500 Tram cars and about 500 buses and one very quickly understands that you can get nearly everywhere by tram.
The ticketing system is a very traditional system using paper tickets without any sort of automatic control. Total trust is given to users: during my 4 days stay, I have not been inspected once and, without anything special to viennese behavior, I do suspect a substancial level of fraud.
Tickets and travelling cards may be purchased at tobacconists, news agencies or automatic vending machines largely installed throughout the network. Tickets must be punched before use through the blue punchers located on board Trams ans buses and at the entrance of the metro stations.
The fare structure is based on a zone system which takes into account the whole region, the city of Vienna is all located into the same zone. It will cost you 1,80€ for a single trip in the same direction using as many mode of transport as required to reach destination. If you do not have a ticket when boarding, it will cost you 2,20€ buying on board. The city being very touristic, a number of more advantageous fares are available, even a multitrip is available but you will have to learn how to fold it before sticking it into the puncher.
